History of Pride Month
In New York, throughout the 60s, people from the LGBTQ+ community were not welcomed in public spaces, let alone in bars. The few establishments that welcomed members of this community were regularly raided by the police. During this period, it was forbidden to dance between men, to wear clothes of the opposite gender, and even serve alcohol to them.
On the 28th of June 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn which led to a riot giving way to the Liberation Movement. The Stonewall Inn attendees on that day decided to fight homophobic behaviours, the battle was then joined by more members of the LGBTQ+ community, thus becoming an icon of the struggle for gay rights, as similar events took place in other parts of New York in the following days. These events became recognised as catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States and around the world. The riots between the police and militant groups lasted until the 3rd of July 1969.
Gradually, pride marches, bringing together the LGBTQ+ community, were organized on the last weekend of June, as a tribute to the Stonewall riots.
Over the years, June became a month of celebration of identities and orientations in memory of the Stonewall riots.
