History of the National Lottery

The game was known as the National Lottery when it was launched in 1994. Draws were initially held once a week on Saturday evenings, and the choices varied from 1 to 49. The Wednesday draw appeared in 1997, and in 2002 the National Lottery changed its name to the UK lotto.

In 2015, the lottery was renamed the Lotto Millionaire Raffle, which offered a £1 million prize, and 20 prizes worth £20,000 each. On the same year, the following changes occurred in the UK lotto: the ball pool increased from 49 to 59, the jackpot limit appeared, and an additional prize round for 2 correctly guessed numbers were added.

Overall, the growing interest in the lottery that was created in 1994 resulted in the variation of rules and regulations overtime.

What is the National Lottery

The British Lottery, as the name suggests, is the official lottery of the UK. The UK lottery is franchisedby the UK government and the licence to operate the lottery has been granted to a group known as the Camelot Group while the regulatory operations of the lottery is done by the Gambling Commission.

Only people aged over 18 or over are allowed to participate in the UK lottery. Although tickets can be purchased online from the National Lottery website, they are only available to those who meet this criteria.

How to play the National Lottery

To participate in the UK lotto, players must purchase a lottery ticket and are allowed to choose 6 numbers from a choice of 59 and also have the option of choosing a lucky dip where numbers are chosen at random for you. Draws are held twice a week, six numbers are chosen and a bonus number is also chosen from the other 53. If the numbers on your ticket match exactly the 6 numbers drawn, you have won the jackpot. Even if your ticket does not match all 6 numbers drawn, you still have a chance to win something as there are prizes for matching 2,3,4 or 5 of the numbers drawn without excluding the bonus number.

So far, the biggest lottery jackpot to date amounted to £161.6 million in 2011. The probability of hitting the UK lottery jackpot is 1 out of 45 million.
